Stability Sensitive Site

ngahere_ret_wall.jpgCook Costello Ltd was engaged to provide investigation and design services for a new home on Ngahere Drive in Whangarei. The work required addressing the instability hazard on site. This involved designing a retaining a foundation system to enhance the stability of the site and provide a platform allowing room for spacious living and manoeuvring of vehicles. The solution chosen for construction involves three separate timber retaining walls to terrace the site, the largest being 3.0m.

Concrete footings were constructed and ground floor extends through the filled area to support the house. The slope was modelled in slope analysis software called 'Slide' (by Rocscience) for a range of groundwater conditions.

Cook Costello Ltd also provided construction monitoring and testing and was able to respond quickly to problems arising on site.

10896_site_visit_100708_002.jpgA modified limestone outcrop was encountered when boring holes for the 3.0m wall. As the rock could not be bored with conventional equipment, the section wall affected was redesigned. The poles now key in behind the outcrop and are tied back at the top.

The result is an attractive, spacious home with a great aspect transforming what was a challenging stability sensitive site.
