A Whangarei District Council Project. This was a complex project involving a 5 leg roundabout, with widening of a Road Bridge and construction of a new Rail bridge. Cook Costello Civil Engineers were Head Consultants, Designers and Engineers to the project.
Innovative designs and construction methods were involved. All major services, wastewater, storm water, high pressure gas, 33kV oil filled power cables and water mains for the Whangarei City passed through the intersection. Widening the road bridge with a stiffer hollow core beam section over a 28m span was kept structurally separate from the exiting T section. This saved council substantial cost and provided for reuse of the remaining life in the existing bridge.
The rail bridge involving demolition of the existing bridge and erection of a new bridge was completed within a 48-hour rail closure. All works were undertaken with a live intersection operating and minimised road closures at off peak times.
The client is very satisfied with the project outcome and operation of the new intersection.
