Detecting Unmarked Graves or Archaeological Features

Aim

Historic graves are not always marked with headstones or surface indicators. Before new development can occur in or near a cemetery, it is critical to confirm whether unmarked graves are present to avoid cultural, legal, and reputational risks. The purpose of this geophysical survey was to detect and map any potential unmarked graves within the proposed development area, providing certainty for planning and decision-making.


Approach

The 7,000 m² site was systematically scanned using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) at 0.5 m line spacing. A lower-frequency antenna was selected to achieve the necessary depth penetration for grave detection. A total of 580 individual profile lines were collected and compiled into a three-dimensional subsurface model. This enabled horizontal and vertical “slices” through the ground to identify features of interest across multiple depth levels.

Results

The GPR survey identified 27 potential unmarked graves distributed across the site. These features were characterised by anomalies consistent with ground disturbance within the expected burial depth range. Importantly, the anomalies were elongated, uniform in orientation, and of similar dimensions to the marked graves visible on the surface. These consistencies provided high confidence in the interpretation despite the absence of invasive verification.

Outputs & Value

The resulting map of potential grave locations provides councils and developers with a clear visualisation of sensitive areas. This enables informed decisions about site layout, ground disturbance, and heritage protection.

Beyond this case, the approach demonstrates how GPR can be a cost-efficient, non-invasive method for identifying subsurface cultural or archaeological features before development begins. Early identification:
