When Wellington International Airport Limited (WIAL) encountered difficulties locating voids beneath a heavily reinforced concrete slab, they turned to Cook Costello for an innovative solution. The thick slab blocked traditional Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) methods, but through close collaboration with Drain Doctors and Fletchers, the team devised a creative approach. Drain Doctors, under Cook Costello’s expert guidance, used a 600mm diameter stormwater pipe as a conduit for GPR data collection, successfully bypassing the slab and mapping the subsurface conditions.

With a tight timeline, Cook Costello delivered high-resolution data that helped structural engineers make informed decisions, ensuring the integrity of the site. By leveraging their flexibility and fast, solution-oriented approach, the team overcame a significant challenge, providing WIAL with critical insights while maintaining the project schedule.
