About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated intermediate to senior geophysicist to drive and grow our geophysics capability across the South Island. You will be the technical and operational champion for geophysics services, leading a team of geophysicists and geoscience professionals, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams across our civil, structural, geotechnical, surveying, and geophysics practices.
This role offers the opportunity to shape strategic direction, lead high-impact projects, and influence the application of advanced geophysical methods in hazard assessment, site characterisation, and risk mitigation across New Zealand.
About You
As an intermediate to senior geophysicist, your responsibilities will include:
Lead and mentor a growing team of geophysicists and support staff to deliver high-quality geophysical investigations and modelling.
Plan, manage, and deliver geophysics projects across the South Island, ensuring work is well-scoped, technically robust, and delivered on time and budget.
Apply and innovate geophysical survey methods (e.g., seismic, resistivity, MASW, GPR, and other advanced techniques) to understand subsurface conditions and reduce uncertainty for multidisciplinary projects.
Work closely with senior engineers, geotechnical specialists, surveyors, and other stakeholders to integrate geophysical insights into wider site characterisation and design solutions.
Build and maintain strong client relationships, supporting business development and expanding geophysics services within existing and new markets.
Support operational excellence, including project resourcing, quality assurance, health and safety, and continuous improvement of tools, workflows, and methodologies.
Represent the company in technical forums, conferences, and industry events, showcasing our geophysical expertise.
You’ll be a strong technical leader with a passion for geophysics and people-focused management. We’re looking for someone with:
A relevant degree in geophysics, geoscience, engineering, or a related field.
Extensive experience 6 to 12 years in applied geophysics, ideally within engineering consultancy or infrastructure sectors.
Proven leadership experience, with the ability to motivate and develop teams and influence across multidisciplinary groups.
Hands-on experience with a variety of geophysical survey techniques, data processing, and interpretation tools.
Strong commercial understanding, excellent project management skills, and experience engaging with clients and stakeholders.
Outstanding communication skills – able to explain complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
A proactive, problem-solving mindset with a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
What We Offer
The opportunity to lead and grow a high-value geophysics service within a supportive multidisciplinary team.
Exposure to diverse and technically challenging projects across the South Island and New Zealand.
Competitive remuneration and flexible working arrangements.
A collaborative, inclusive culture that values initiative, learning, and career development.
Professional development support, including opportunities for technical training, conference participation, and industry engagement.
