Hundertwasser Art Centre

The Hundertwasser Art Centre celebrates the artist, architect and environmentalist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, whose belief that “the straight line is godless and immoral” helped shape the building’s flowing, organic form.

The site sits at Whangārei’s Town Basin, where deep soft marine clay and mud created a significant settlement risk. For a building with intricate architectural features and highly individual geometry, uncontrolled movement could have caused serious performance and aesthetic issues. The foundation solution needed to transfer building loads to competent rock well below the surface, while remaining practical to construct and appropriate for the project budget.

Cook Costello was engaged to provide geotechnical and structural inputs for the project, including:

• Ground investigations to identify the depth of soft sediments and competent rock

• Deep piled foundations design to bypass weak marine sediments, with piles socketed into underlying rock

• Settlement analysis and optimisation to manage building movement while keeping the solution buildable and cost-effective

• Construction observation and technical support to help confirm the works were completed in line with the design intent

The resulting piled foundation system now supports one of New Zealand’s most distinctive cultural buildings on ground that would otherwise have presented a major settlement challenge.

The project demonstrates the value of combining geotechnical investigation, structural design and practical construction input early, particularly where architecture, ground conditions and long-term performance all need to be considered together.
