Drone surveying and LiDAR comparison defined landslip extent without placing surveyors on unstable ground.

Following a natural disaster, understanding the extent of land damage is a critical first step in recovery. At this property in Massey, limited access and safety risks near a steep landslip meant the affected slope could not be safely surveyed on foot.


Cook Costello used drone-based topographic surveying to capture detailed surface data and support the engineering assessment. The new survey data was compared with pre-event LiDAR to quantify how much material had been lost and help guide the remedial design. This approach allowed the project team to assess the landslip quickly and safely, without requiring surveyors to access the unstable slope. It also provided a clear evidence base for understanding the scale of land movement and planning the next stage of repair.


Drone-based survey is particularly useful after natural-hazard events where access is limited, ground conditions are unsafe, and reliable pre-event LiDAR is available for comparison.
